Timber frame roofs, walls, suspended floors, and as loft insulation installed between ceiling joists in an attic space.
Overview
IndiBreathe Flex is a BBA certified natural, breathable, flexible insulation made from UK-grown industrial hemp and recycled jute fibres. It provides exceptional thermal and acoustic performance while regulating moisture and humidity to prevent condensation. Ideal for use in timber frame roofs and walls, stud walls, suspended floors, and lofts, it offers a sustainable solution for creating energy-efficient, comfortable, and healthy indoor environments. With a carbon-negative production process, IndiBreathe Flex is a safe, eco-friendly choice for new builds and retrofits.
Where to use it
IndiBreathe Flex can be installed between rafters, joists, and within cavities in roofs, walls, ceilings, and floors. It is especially effective for timber frame constructions and works well in both new builds and retrofits. The product is suitable for insulating suspended timber floors and attic / loft spaces, making it a versatile solution for various insulation needs.
What it does
IndiBreathe Flex provides superior thermal performance, with a thermal conductivity of 0.039 W/mK for thicknesses between 20-100mm, and 0.042 W/mK for thicknesses between 120-140mm. It also offers excellent summer heat protection thanks to its high specific heat capacity (2370 J/kgK), which helps keep indoor temperatures stable both in summer and winter.
IndiBreathe Flex is a highly breathable insulation and can absorb excess humidity to effectively regulate moisture and lower the risk of condensation and mould. This ensures that both the building fabric and its occupants benefit from a dry, comfortable environment.
In addition to its thermal properties, IndiBreathe Flex also provides acoustic benefits by dampening external noise. Its dense natural fibre composition contributes to creating quieter and more private living and working spaces.
Why we love it
IndiBreathe Flex supports circularity in the construction sector by being made from renewable resources and recycled materials, such as hessian jute fibres from repurposed coffee sacks. Its carbon-negative production process helps reduce embodied carbon emissions, making it a low-impact choice for environmentally conscious projects. The product is designed to last the lifetime of the building and can be reused at the end of its life, ensuring minimal waste.
IndiBreathe Flex is a BBA certified sustainable solution for energy-efficient building projects, storing -0.51kg CO₂eq/kg of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, from cradle to gate (when the hemp seeds start to grow, to the finished product leaving the factory). It's made from hemp, a rapidly growing, low-maintenance plant that absorbs 2 tons of CO₂ per hectare, IndiBreathe Flex provides a carbon-negative, environmentally friendly option for buildings.
The insulation is light and soft to the touch, making it easy to handle and install without the need for personal protective equipment (PPE). It is flexible yet rigid enough to prevent slumping. This ensures long-term performance and eliminates the risk of gaps forming or it becoming compacted over time.
How it works
IndiBreathe Flex leverages the unique thermal properties of hemp and jute to deliver exceptional insulation. Hemp, known for its ability to store heat, helps buffer temperature changes within a building. During warmer months, the insulation absorbs heat and releases it gradually, reducing the likelihood of overheating. In cooler seasons, the low thermal conductivity ensures effective heat retention, helping to lower energy use and maintain indoor comfort.
The natural properties of hemp and jute make IndiBreathe Flex a highly breathable and moisture-regulating insulation. These fibres absorb and release moisture without compromising thermal performance, making the insulation an ideal choice for preventing condensation and preserving indoor air quality. This natural ability to manage moisture ensures the building fabric remains dry and healthy, avoiding common problems such as mould and damp. Regulation of moisture is further enhanced by IndiTherm Breathe’s hygroscopic qualities that help manage humidity within the building envelope. Together, these fibres create a durable insulation solution that improves both thermal comfort and long-term building performance.

Installation Guide
How to Install
IndiBreathe Flex is designed for easy friction-fit installation between joists, studs and rafters.
Cut the batts slightly oversized to ensure a snug fit. For best results, use a recently sharpened Bahco insulation saw. Alternatively cut the insulation with a dual-blade reciprocating electric saw.
The insulation should be installed in dry conditions into dry spaces between joists, rafters and studs. In the case of suspended floors, effective ventilation must be maintained in the space below. Our Installation guide for suspended floors provides detailed instructions for this application.
After installation between timber studs on external walls or between rafters, ensure it is covered internally with a suitable Intelligent airtightness and vapour control membrane, and then sealed airtight with airtightness tapes to maximize performance.
Store the product in dry conditions and avoid stacking pallets on top of each other to prevent compression that would reduce the thermal performance.
